Downton Heritage Homsestay is a hundred year old bungalow. It is located in Kowdiar, a rare destination in Trivandrum. The place belonging to the Western Ghats had been untouched until the 19th century. Because of its thick forests and many wild animals, the place had been completely inaccessible. In 1895 when Mullaperiyar Dam was designed, the place had gained slight popularity. It was in 1926 that a British planter named J. R. Vincent bought a 700-acre property near the lake for cardamom plantation and called it Downton Estate.
J. R. Vincent built a colonial style ranch home in 1930 which now offers tourists a relaxing stay. This 19th century bungalow has been well-maintained to retain its original charm even after almost a hundred years. The bungalow has exposed ceiling beams, Georgian water boiler and marble walk-in bathtubs. The bungalow is set amidst a delightful 600-acre cardamom plantation. There are dense forests and cliffs close to the bungalow which allow guests to take treks and safaris. The rooms in the bungalow are not air-conditioned; there is no landline telephone connectivity or internet and no television in the rooms. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is offered to the guests.
