The name 'Kodaikanal' means 'The Gift of the Forest' in Tamil, the local language. Situated in the hills of Dindigul, Kodaikanal is a very popular tourist destination. It is called "Princess of Hill Stations. The place was first occupied by a tribe named 'Palaiyar'. The town is actually situated on a plateau near the Palani Hills. The hillsides of Kodaikanal are mostly covered with meadows and grasslands. The place is famous for its flora which includes Cypress, Eucalyptus, Acacia and Pear trees. You can also find large dahlias of different hues and water lilies.

Tourism has the biggest impact on Kodaikanal's economy. Kodaikanal is also home to many churches and temples. The most popular attraction is Kodaikanal Lake. Among the other major tourist attractions are Bryant Park, Coaker's Walk, Bear Shola Falls, Pillar Rocks and Dolphin's Nose. A Museum of Natural History and a Solar Observatory are also present in Kodaikanal. Handicrafts, Home-made chocolates and Eucalyptus oil are some of the souvenirs that tourists take home.

By Train

The nearest railway station to Kodaikanal is Kodairoad Station at a distance of 100 kilometres from the town. From the station, you need to hire a taxi to reach Kodaikanal.

By Road

Buses are available to Kodaikanal from Madurai Aarappalayam bus stand and from bus stations in Kodai road and Dindigul.
