Detailed Info

Munnar, at an altitude of 1600 metre above sea level, is a hill station in the Idukki district of Kerala and is part of the Western Ghats mountain ranges. The term Munnar literally means three rivers in the native language, Malayalam; aptly called so, as the place is located at the convergence of three rivers of Mudhirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly. Munnar was once the summer resort of the royal family of the State and later that of the British Government. Munnar offers breathtaking stunning views of nature at its best and demonstrates how ots possible for people and nature to co-exist. The climate and altitude of Munnar make it ideal for tea plantations and hence, the town has a line of tea plantations and factories.

For those yearning for some action, you can opt for mountain biking. Munnar has some excellent cycle trails which help you traverse the tea plantations, cardamom estates and Shola forests. It offers a chance to enjoy the mesmerising natural beauty with a tinge of action through mountain biking.

Expert cyclists may take the exciting steep descents and ascents or navigate through the rough terrains on the tapered mountain roads or the narrow estate roads.

The tracks through the plantations also present you a chance to talk to the labourers in the plantations and get to know the local life better. You can explore the thin roads to Lockhart gap and relish the enthralling sight of Bison Valley. You can get a fascinating view of the misty mountains and forests; with fogs which embrace you now and then. Suryanelli, Vandanmedu, Periyar are some other popular locations for mountain biking in Munnar.

Most hotels in the town offer you bikes. If not, approach District Tourism Promotion Council, which offers cycling facilities at INR 25 per cycle per hour and INR 150 per cycle per day. Alternatively, you can try for the same at KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) Tea County. Though the facility is restricted to in-house tourists, at times they are also offered on lease on request.

Many private tour operators specialising in mountain biking, also offer the facility. Kalypso Adventures is one among them. It offers a one day tour of 6 hours for INR 4600 per person, for a minimum of two people. The package includes a guide, a supporting vehicle, a helmet and geared cycles along with lunch, water and refreshment.
