The Nilgiri Mountain Railway Toy Train is a 1000-meter gauge railway, offering tourists a journey of a lifetime. On this wonderful journey across the Nilgiri Hills, travelers get spectacular views of tea plantations, dense forests, rocky terrains, ravines and majestic hills. The one way journey is 5 hours long but the return journey is only three and a half hours long. During the journey, the train moves at a very slow pace with the altitude ranging from 300 metres to 2200 metres. It ascends the Nilgiri Hills moving through tunnels and curves that make the journey especially adventurous. In the 46-km journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty, the train passes through 16 tunnels and over 250 bridges.
The train starts from Mettupalayam at 7:10 AM and reaches Ooty at 12:00 PM. On the return journey, the train starts at 2:00 PM from Ooty and reaches Mettupalayam at 5:35 PM. The engine for the train is an 'X' Class steam locomotive, made in Switzerland. The carriages are mainly blue in colour with some parts of it painted in cream. They have large windows that make sure you enjoy the great views of the surroundings. The work on the Nilgiri Toy Train was completed in 1908. In 2005, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
