Detailed Info

Alappuzha aka Alleppey, popularly known as the ‘Venice of the East’ is a district in Kerala, with an exhaustive network of canals and backwaters. The place, once a commercial hub has now lost its importance in that aspect to the nearby district of Ernakulam; but still no other place can compete with Alleppey on its niche businesses like coir and handicrafts. Also Alleppey still continues to amaze the world with its stunning grid of freshwater lakes, backwaters, canals, lagoons and beaches.

A relaxed, lethargic ride through these backwaters in Alleppey in a house boat is an indispensable part of a Kerala trip. Houseboats are traditional boats that serve the purpose of a house in the floating waters, complete with toilets, kitchen and bedrooms. Known as ‘Kettuvallam’ in the local language, Malayalam, they were a part and parcel of the social and economic life of the state, when water was a major mode of transport. To suit the modern days, the houseboats have undergone revolutionary changes and now offer all sorts of luxury including television, air conditioners, extravagant furnishing, premium food menu, candle lit dinner, Jacuzzi and even shower panel.

During peak season from October to February, the rates are on the higher side. The best time to visit is during off season from March to September when you will get the best prices. You can negotiate to get the best rates and you need to pay an advance.

Lunch, Evening snacks, Dinner and Breakfast are served for overnight cruise while only Lunch and Evening snacks are provided for day cruise.
