For the adventurous souls, Kerala offers excitement in the form of kayaking in its serene backwaters. Do not back out for lack of prior kayaking experience; as you don’t need any. Kerala Kayaking, a unit of Kerala Canoe Tourism is one of the pioneers in kayaking in Kerala. The starting point is Thottathodu Palam near Keraleeyam lake resort. There are three basic daily tours, viz. Morning Sunrise Tour, Day Tours and Sunset Tours.
· Morning Sunrise Tour is a 4 hour Kayaking tour starting from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM that helps capture the beauty of the backwaters as the sun starts rushing in. They offer a complimentary traditional countryside breakfast.
· The 7 hour Kayaking Tour starts at 11:30 AM and extends till 6:30 PM. You can cover the big lakes in support mechanised Shikkara boats and paddle in small canals. There is a complimentary traditional lunch, along with a visit to any local toddy shop along the route. You can also have tea at a local tea shop (Kerala’s tea shops are famous for its healthy political discussions where anything and everything political under the sun are discussed by the villagers, yes Kerala is a state with high level of political awareness.), you get chance to interact with the villagers and experience life their way.
· Sunset tours, starting from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM are available on demand, but cannot be pre-booked; so please check with the availability before you plan your itinerary.
· There are also exclusive tours viz,
o Night fishing, from 7:00 PM to 10:30 AM to catch peartspot fish, the state fish and the exquisite prawns.
o Single track backwater village cycling, which combines the adventure of single track cycling offroads, using MTB bikes with kayaking in backwaters.
o Food tours for the foodies, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM where you will tasting different dishes of Kerala.
o Shikkara boat tours through small canals, for the not so adventurous souls are also available
Kerala kayaking provides all the necessary equipment like Kayaks, Paddles, Life Jackets etc. They also offer mechanized canoe boats with a driver for support.
