Editor's Review

The Marari beach is a beautiful beach in Kerala but since it is not very famous, you will not find a lot of people visiting this beach. You can try swimming and even surfing at the beach. The main problem of the beach is that it is not clean. But since it is very easy to reach, you can give it a try if you're visiting the place.

PROS

  • One of the best beaches in Kerala.
  • Not very crowded
  • Many home stays and hotels are available for stay nearby.
  • Great place for swimming, snorkelling, and surfing.
  • Ideally located within a few hours’ drive of all major tourist destinations in central Kerala.

CONS

  • Beautiful beach but no restaurants nearby.
  • Not suitable for those wanting to enjoy noisy water sports, buy ice creams on the beach or haggle with touts.
  • Unfortunately, it is one of those beaches where you are going to find human excrement in certain areas.

Detailed Info

Marari Beach is a beach in Alappuzha District of Kerala, India, 11 kms from Alappuzha town. Marari originates from 'Mararikulum', a local fishing village on the Arabian Sea coast. The serenity and tranquillity of this beach take beach lovers backwards in time. The indolent pace of local life makes vacationing near the Marari beach a reviving experience. It has been rightly rated as one of the world’s top five Hammock Beaches by National Geographic survey.

It is one of the beaches with unmatched clean environment and pictorial beauty where many tourists flock to enjoy swimming, snorkelling, surfing and also the authenticity of Kerala. The stunning ecology of this place and the fishing village around it makes it great to visit. Marari Beach is not suitable for those wanting to enjoy noisy water sports, buy ice creams on the beach, or haggle with touts.

The string of tranquil fishing villages dotted along the coast retains a unique spirit at Marari that has been lost elsewhere. The beach has not been marred by development, unlike other tourist destinations. Only the local fishermen, their traditional colorful wooden boats and the abundant wildlife share the beach, so you are virtually alone to enjoy the endless crisp white sand under your bare feet, the vibrant green coconut palms, the cool sea breeze and the azure ocean. The leisurely pace of life at Marari is infectious and will help you discover the essence of rest and relaxation that will rejuvenate the soul, so make sure you visit before it is "discovered" by the tourist crowd!
